Talk to me of Mendicino

I went to San Francisco last weekend. For a boat show, what else? Saw what I had to see and bought a few things. It was a beautiful, sunny weekend and I couldn’t stand the traffic in the ‘Bay Area’ so after one day I headed back to Oregon. Went along the  California coast highway and it was spectacular. I had no music with me (blunder) but I thought of the song by Kate and Anna McGarrigle—‘Talk to me of Mendicino’.

Mendicino is important to me for two reasons. First, I love the song. Two, when we sailed, 32 years ago across the Pacific, we got into some bad weather off Mendicino, California and we were scared. Remember it well. Ok, we were 500 miles or more off the coast but the closest place we could pinpoint—and nail—for the bad weather was Mendicino.

So, with apologies and thanks…

Rise up over the Rockies and down on into California

Out to where but the rocks remain

No place for a sailor.

No place for a sailor.

Let the sun set on the ocean

I will watch it from the shore

Let the sun rise over the redwoods

I’ll rise with it till I rise no more

Some redwoods are 2000 years old.

Some redwoods are 2000 years old.

Talk to me of Mendicino

Closing my eyes I hear the sea

  1. Is this one giant step for a boy from Loon Lake or for mankind …. or miles to go before you sleep ??

  2. This is a great web site. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I will follow with fascination, as a geographer!
